How To Prepare And Pass Your Hazard Perception Test
After getting your learner’s licence, you have to complete the logbook hours required to appear in your hazard perception test. You need to pass your Hazard Perception test as it is one of the requirements to get your P1 licence. In this blog, we have gathered the guidelines and tips on how to prepare and pass your Hazard Perception Test.
Hazard Perception Test
The Hazard Perception Test verifies how well you can perceive the whole road and respond to it safely, practising identifying potential hazards such as other vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians in real-life scenarios. There are practise videos available on Vic Roads website in which you will be given instructions and how you react to different hazards. This means checking your response when you might need to slow down, turn, overtake or do no action.
Tips To Pass Your Hazard Perception Test
If you are ready and have done much practice on the road facing real hazards, it will be easy for you to pass the test in the first go. We would like to give you few tips before you book your test:
1. Take your training from a reputable driving school-
You are most likely to go through a focused instruction by your trainer, which will help you in your hazard perception situational analysis when you are on the road.
2. Be alert in recognising a potential hazard-
We must know that all situations are not potential hazards. Also, not all risks are easily identifiable at that time. You should always be prepared and careful about looking for a potential hazard in your, and the fellow driver’s car as the fellow driver’s random behaviour will force you to react in turn. You should also be conscious of different road conditions in various weather conditions and handle those situations. An example of this is when the weather is rainy, you have to increase the gap separating your car and the car in front of you.
3. Judge the reaction required for a hazard before reacting
Most car accidents on the roads are made by misjudging the danger and the action that needs to be taken for it. Some times, drivers act too carelessly, and at other times, they act too untimely that causes an accident. That is why you need to practise the hazard perception test and avoid the wrong actions taken in response to a danger.
4. Stay Calm
It would be best to stay calm and focus on giving the proper response to a hazard. You shouldn’t react too late or too agile to any hazardous situation as this can cause an accident that could’ve been avoided by acting right on time.
5. Don't use any drugs before your HPT
You shouldn’t use any intoxicating substance like drugs, alcohol, or medication that can affect your reflexes and have other harmful side effects on your body as it impacts on how you perform in your Hazard Perception Test.
